Wisteria Lane gets an alien, twins, and a murder

We get the wedding first, then the flashbacks? Is there any ABC show that takes place in a linear fashion any more?

My favorite line was Gaby talking about the problems her niece is having. "Yeah, she's one dead dog away from a country song."

When she started her first scene by being snappy, I thought "Ah, nice. There's Drea de Matteo playing the Drea de Matteo character."

As for her family, does anyone ever come to this neighborhood where they don't spend their first two shots on camera just staring menacingly out the window? I guess we're going to have another neighborhood kid obsessed with Julie.

Of course, then we get to the end and we see...whatever that was on her back. Is de Matteo an alien? It looks like she's got kind of a Videodrome thing going on down by her spine. That might be the worst tattoo removal scar I've ever scene.

As for the last scene, great cliffhanger. Is Julie dead? It doesn't look like it from the promos for next week's show, but that may not mean anything. How will they drag out a mystery that seems pretty obvious? Of course, the last time we thought the neighborhood was being stalked by a scary guy who lived in the basement and ate ice cream, it turned out to be his brother. I guess they can swerve us again.

Here comes the bride on 'Desperate Housewives'

"The Amazing Race": The race begins anew with its seventh (!) consecutive Emmy wins. This season's cast includes a former Miss America, a team of Harlem Globetrotters and a young man with Asperger's Syndrome. 8 p.m. CBS

"The Cleveland Show": "The Family Guy" has a spinoff. 8:30 p.m. Fox

"Desperate Housewives": The big question is who Mike Delfino was smooching at the alter: Susan (Teri Hatcher) or Katherine (Dana Delany). My money is on Susan, who Mike rescued - in dramatic fashion - in the season finale. 9 p.m. ABC

"Brothers & Sisters": Will Kitty and Robert reconcile? Will Justin and Rebecca plan a wedding without a hitch? (Not with Nora and Holly planning it!) And it looks like Tommy (Balthazar Getty) is definitely off the show. He doesn't appear in a new cast photo released this week.) 10 p.m. ABC

"Dexter": Dexter is a dad now, which makes being a serial killer a wee bit more complicated when you're trying to be a good role model for your kid. 10 p.m. Showtime

"Cold Case": Only Ray Charles tunes will play in this premiere about a 1966 shipboard murder. 10 p.m. CBS

Other premieres: "60 Minutes," 7 p.m. CBS; "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," 7 p.m. ABC; "The Simpsons," 8 p.m. Fox; "Family Guy," 9 p.m. Fox; "American Dad," 9:30 p.m. Fox
"The National Parks"

Ken Burns tells the story of our national parks over the course of 12 hours. Here are two of them. 6 p.m. WUNC

'Desperate Housewives' returns in strong form

They're heading for a wedding on Desperate Housewives, but you'll have to watch to find out who "they" are.
Don't fret. The answer comes almost immediately, and while it may not be the answer some fans want, it's well-delivered and likely to strike most as acceptable. And that's just the first bit of good news about a strong seasonal return that starts with a bang, ends with a cliffhanger jolt, and offers a good story for each of the wives in between while dropping a possibly worthy new addition in their midst.
The newcomer to this suburban lane is a tough city girl played by The Sopranos' Drea de Matteo, who moves into Mary Alice's now-empty house with her husband (Jeffrey Nordling) and possibly troubled son (Beau Mirchoff) in tow. They clearly have a secret, because if they didn't, they wouldn't serve much of a purpose on the show.
Intros are efficiently made, but the episode's real focus is on the four main housewives. Whether it's Susan's wedding or not, you know she'll be preoccupied by it, so that's her story. Bree is torn between Orson and Karl (Richard Burgi, who has one of his best episodes yet), Lynette is still reeling from her later-life pregnancy, and Gaby is struggling to deal with her now live-in niece.
There's humor and poignancy in all the stories and good work all around. In particular, the hour serves as a reminder of how strong and varied an actress Felicity Huffman is, and of how strong a comic force Eva Longoria Parker has become.
It's true that, over time, Desperate has lost some of its ability to shock. (How could it not?) And it's equally true that the removal of the Mary Alice story has cost the show some of its depth. But it remains a very good TV series, and this is a very good start. There are landmines and possible dead zones ahead, as there always are for TV series. But depending on how some of these stories play out — Lynette's in particular — there's also the potential for a season that returns this already-solid show to top form.
And you get a wedding. What more do you want from one hour?

'Housewives' actress Eva Longoria back to school

Eva Longoria Parker says she is going back to school to learn about her Mexican roots.

The 34-year-old "Desperate Housewives" actress says she will enroll in a master's program in Chicano studies and political science.

In its Mexico edition released Wednesday, Hola magazine quoted Longoria as saying that she wants to "learn more about the history of the country we come from." She didn't say what university she will attend.

Longoria says she also is polishing her Spanish. The Texas native's family is originally from the northern Mexican city of Monterrey.

The actress was in Mexico City last month to take on a Spanish-speaking role for the first time in a Mexican film about kidnapping titled "Days of Grace."

'Housewives' star attacked by Cross cookie

Desperate Housewives newcomer Drea de Matteo has revealed that Marcia Cross threw a cookie at her on her first day of filming.

Speaking to Desperate Housewives Network, the 37-year-old actress - Angie Bolen on the ABC show - added that the accident looked as though it was written into the scene.

"My character made all these cookies for the girls, which I guess is what they do on Wisteria Lane to become friends with each other - make each other food, even though we're the skinniest people in the world!" she said.

"The girls were getting so annoyed that in every take they had to eat a cookie and Marcia finally goes, 'I'm sick of these cookies!' and she goes to throw one on the dish and I wasn't paying attention and the thing came flying at me, hit me in the neck!"

She added: "I was like, 'Wow - she's trying to decapitate me!' It looked like it was written into the scene. It was pretty perfect and it was really funny but I think Marcia felt really bad."

Desperate Housewives returns for its sixth season Sunday, September 27 on ABC.
